The Gleaners Cafe
Hidden away on Hoe Street, The Gleaners Cafe is a true neighbourhood gem and a rare find, even by East London’s indie standards. With just a handful of reviews, it’s still a well-kept secret — but those who know, return again and again.
Atmosphere:
The Gleaners isn’t just another place to grab coffee – it’s got that neighbourhood soul most spots only dream about. Run by women, open to everyone (yep, proper LGBTQ+ friendly), and honestly, you can just feel the good mood in the air as soon as you walk in. Regulars swing by for vegan brunch or a bit of homemade cake, and there’s always a table or two with folks catching up or chatting like they’ve known each other for years.
It’s got that rare “turn up as you are, nobody cares what you’re wearing” thing going on. No one’s putting on airs here. Feels more like hanging out in someone’s kitchen than sitting in a café, and I mean that as a big compliment.
Menu:
The menu changes regularly with Friday night takeaways a highlight (think: aubergine & sweet potato massaman curry with rice, salad, and a pakora side). Expect plenty of vegan and gluten-free options, hearty brunches, and outstanding coffee and cakes — all at reasonable prices.
What regulars say:
“A sublime place to get wonderful coffee and cake and vegan brunch.”
“A real heart of the community in Walthamstow. Gorgeous place!!”
Why visit:
Quiet spot for working, relaxing, or just getting away from the city’s rush.
Community events and a genuine local welcome.
Rotating, inventive veggie and vegan menus — you’ll never get bored!
Insider tip:
Order ahead for Friday’s special, and grab a window seat if you can. This is the kind of cafe you wish you lived closer to.
